Project details

This project is being undertaken by AIATSIS in collaboration with local partner organisation’s, with funding from the Indigenous Reference Group subprogram of the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation. Project staff and community research project officers will interview people at three different locations around the country, to discuss the importance of fishing and what it means to Aboriginal people.

The project team is looking for a Community Research Project Officer for our South Australian case site. The position will work closely with our research partner, the Far West Coast Aboriginal Corporation (FWCAC) and will be based out of Ceduna.

Duties of the Position

The Community Research Project Officer will work with AIATSIS staff and the project team to deliver the project plan and communication agreement for this project on behalf of FWCAC. This will include, but may not be limited to:

  • organising visits to Aboriginal communities and facilitating community meetings;
  • collecting and maintaining Free Prior and Informed Consent agreements with case study partners (individuals and organisations);
  • undertaking field work, including interviews, focus groups and other activities as required, to a standard that enables the collection of information and data for the final project report;
  • assisting with analysis of project interviews, and;
  • providing regular communication to AIATSIS and the Project Team (including fortnightly updates).

A successful candidate who can competently conduct all of these duties will need to be available for up to 250 hours of work over the project period. The bulk of these work hours will be required before the end of this calendar year.

There is considerable flexibility to choose work hours, subject to partner community requirements and project deadlines. This position will involve regular travel within South Australia, and infrequent travel interstate.

Requirements

Required capabilities of the successful applicant include:

  • the ability to organise and run community meetings in remote locations;
  • a proven ability to work with minimal supervision and in a team environment;
  • initiative, flexibility and effective time management of own performance;
  • experience using software packages like MS Word, Excel and Outlook;
  • the ability to communicate a range of topics, issues and responses to a diverse range of people, and;
  • strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience conducting interviews and recording accurate and detailed notes.

Additionally, the successful applicant will need to have a demonstrated commitment to working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and have a demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This commitment will be shown by their capacity to:

  • understand Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and cultures;
  • identify issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people today, and;
  • communicate respectfully with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

An interest and experience in Aboriginal fishing practices would be advantageous.  The role requires an understanding of Aboriginal cultures and respectful communication with Aboriginal people, including the handling of potentially culturally important information.
